The feminist theatre is an alternative theatre that originated in the early 1970's. It addressed a woman's position in society and advocated for change. Through networking between middle-class white women, women shared their stories and gave the phrase, " the personal is the political", meaning. Different forms of feminism, such as radical feminism, realized gender roles and a gender hierarchy in the public life. Feminist Theatre used male theatre tactics and quickly spread in the late 60's and addressed civil rights issues. In the 1970's -80's, feminist theatre continued to try to create a voice for themselves that could be heard, however, because of the increase in economic misfortune, feminist theatre began to decline in production. Although it began to fail in the 1980's, it still exposed people to feminist opinions and paved a way "to revitalize the radical practice of feminist Theatre"(Fennell,179). I don't consider Trifles as a feminist play. I believe the play was too far ahead in the timeline. The play didn't contain women rebelling against the men's opinion or addressing civil rights. It contained remarks that undermined women's hard work and the women in the play did nothing to negate their opinions or speak their mind. I perceive a feminist play to have an empowering message that deals with women's ability to climb up the social ladder, and Trifles did not give off that message.
